A recent opinion piece at CNN about Angelina Jolie's double mastectomy (Article here) had a few errors and had some issues with it. But what was most confusing was wording that mislead the reader to believe that most of the non-familial breast cancer patients did not have BRCA1/2 genes, instead of stating that they did not have mutations in those genes. I was actually kind of surprised when both the author and the article responded to me quite quickly.
Bravo CNN for fixing the inaccuracies but boo to the clinician who wrote the paper with the errors in it.
Great because we are looking to jumpstart our guest blogge again. We've had some great ones in the past and I've got a few lined up for the future. So if you'd like to try your hand at it, leave a comment, send an email, send a letter, but don't send a pipe bomb.
I've been thinking in my mind of some professional goals that I would like to accomplish in 2013 in no certain order.
-Find a place to postdoc
-Get permission to write my dissertation
-Write the tome of irrelevance that no one will read but me and maybe the person who takes over my project
-Defend said dissertation
-Need to purchase body armor and padding for use in the defense to limit damage absorbed from committee
-Publish last paper (or two) from PhD work
-Learn new stuff
-Maybe write for some type of fellowship
What are some professional goals that you folks have in the coming year? And best of luck to you on them.
For me this year has been marked with some modicum of professional success but also personal tragedy. I've celebrated the victories with and weathered the storm with many great friends and family. But I'm especially thankful for Genomic RepairWife, she has been with me through the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. She is my best friend and companion in life.
The following two songs may not mean a whole hill of beans to you guys but I think they mean the world to the two people who the lyrics embody my feelings for.
That's right in case you forgot its time to get ready for fantasy football, trash talking, and mean-spirited color commentary. And if you didn't know, well now you know. For all the regulars you'll be getting an email and for anyone else that wants to play this year leave me a comment, shoot me an email, whatever just let me know.
We play a pick'em league where you pick the team to cover the spread for the game, no individual players so its pretty easy and mindless. Unless you are Arlenna and forget to make your picks every week.
With all this talk of Pit Bulls and breed confusion, I have seized upon the opportunity to commission a breed analysis for Genomic RepairDog since he looks like every breed of small dog that we put him up next to. I swabbed his cheek and sent off the cotton swab in the mail and am awaiting his results. Plus I love the fact they are using breed specific SNPs to give you the animal's breed makeup.

A semi-cultured, good-natured graduate student in biomedical sciences who escaped out of the deep south and now focuses on using genetics and biochemistry to elucidate DNA repair in cells. I also rant about other things non-science related here.
