One year ago today, my blog co-author and I were married by a Justice of the Peace in the NYC courthouse. Our witness was the lovely Arikia, the former cat herder for ScienceBlogs. It was a brilliantly sunny and humid day, and after all the paperwork was signed, we spent the rest of the day running around, waiting in lines and getting other paperwork signed to "prove" to the German authorities that we are legally married. As it is, we are legally married in every country on earth, plus a few more countries on other planets and in other times. Not bad for a person who doesn't "believe in" marriage!
That evening, after all our work was done, we found our way to an air conditioned theatre on the UWS of Manhattan where we watched Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in 3D. It was the third time we'd watched that film together since it had been released a few weeks earlier. [We watched it on opening night in Helsinki, so we have seen this film in theatres in two countries and on two continents, does this make us manic Harry Potter fans?]
Since today is our first anniversary, I thought I'd start the festivities with a gift. Since we met through the blogosphere, it seems appropriate to start things off by posting something on our blog. A little investigating tells me that the traditional gift for one's first wedding anniversary is paper, whilst the modern gift is clocks. (Can anyone tell me who thinks up these gifts anyway?) Which made me decide that I'd love to give this gift to my spouse, the gift of Clocks:
Since Cold Play was unable to make a personal appearance, I am instead sharing a video of their hit song, Clocks, played live in concert in 2003 (before my spouse and I had met).
The dress I wore to the courthouse was yellow -- the first time I've ever worn this color:
["Yellow"; Cold Play, live in concert, 2003]

Congratulations!
When I was working in Amsterdam, the most amusing part of getting a residence permit was the requirement that I get an affidavit from the U.S. Consulate "proving" that I was not married!
i'm so happy for you, kiddo! hard to believe it's been a year already... wow.
Indeed. A rapid yet eventful year. Congratulations to both of you, and may you share an unlimited number of additional years together.
Happy anniversary to you both!
I join the others in chorus in congratulating you on the completing one year of your marriage. May the magic in your lives that you share last for ever and ever.
Paper Clocks
Now you can be traditional, and modern.
thanks everyone!
i have a hard time believing that one year has passed, too. for those who might be curious to know what we did to celebrate, we went to dinner at one of our favorite places in frankfurt; the sunflower garden center (where they sell plants, as well as amazing fresh produce, and they have a rather swank cafe/restaurant/wine cellar inside their greenhouse), then we came home and watched Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince on DVD.
Holy...!
Seriously -- it's been a YEAR? How the heck did THAT happen?
But yes, congratulations and Happy Anniversary! That's fabulous.
Congratulations and Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!
[...] this week GrrlScientist and Bob O’Hara celebrated their first wedding anniversary. Yay! I had planned to do a special [...]
Belatedly, Happy Anniversary! (Could that be "universary"?) As it happens I'm watching a red squirrel now, which probably wishes you a happy anniversary as well.
I wish Grrl, Mr. Grrl and the parrots and cat a Happy Anniversary! You are deserving of all the goodness available in the universe!
